Fletcher and Kerrigan were selected as alternates for the NFC team. With the San Francisco 49ers’ victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game Sunday, San Francisco linebackers Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith, who were original selections, became ineligible for the Pro Bowl because they will be preparing for the Super Bowl. That created openings for Fletcher and Kerrigan.
They will join left tackle Trent Williams and special teams captain Lorenzo Alexander who were selected to the Pro Bowl last month. Quarterback Robert Griffin III also was selected but is injured, and running back Alfred Morris was chosen as an alternate but will not play.
Fletcher made Pro Bowl appearances following the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. This season, the 15-year veteran recorded 139 tackles, three sacks and five interceptions.
Kerrigan, a second-year pro, recorded 54 tackles and a team-high nine sacks – both career-highs. He also returned an interception for a touchdown and forced a fumble.
