Tackles Terron Armstead, Lane Johnson turn heads in 40-yard dash at NFL combine

After going through interviews and medical and psychological examinations on the first two days of the combine, the offensive linemen began their on-field evaluations on Saturday morning.

As the 40-yard dash got underway, it didn’t take time for someone to impress. Arkansas-Pine Bluff tackle Terron Armstead, who is 6 feet 5 and 306 pounds, ran a time of 4.71 seconds – a new combine record.

Shortly after, Oklahoma tackle Lane Johnson ran a time of 4.72 seconds. Those times go down as the two fastest 40-yard-dash times by offensive linemen at the combine. Oregon offensive tackle Kyle Long, the son of former NFL great Howie Long, had the third-fastest time, 4.94 seconds.

Armstead’s unofficial time was announced at 4.65. According to NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, that’s the equivalent of a skill player position such as a running back or wide receiver running a 4.1-second 40-yard dash.

Originally projected as a third-round pick, Armstead likely upped his stock with that time, as well as his performance of 31 reps in the bench press.

A three-time All-Southwestern Athletic Confernece selection, Armstead was coached at Arkansas-Pine Bluff by former Redskins linebacker Monte Coleman.
