Redskins hope, expect to have Grossman back

The Redskins expect to re-sign veteran reserve quarterback Rex Grossman, Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday.

“I expect him to be back. … I’d like to have Rex back,” Shanahan said in Phoenix on the final day of the annual league meeting.

Grossman is an unrestricted free agent.

He served as the Redskins’ third quarterback this past season behind two rookies, Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.

With Griffin recovering from knee surgery, Cousins is in line to work with the starting offense during offseason drills and possibly training camp. He would begin the regular season as the starter if Griffin isn’t ready to play. Grossman potentially could be the team’s top backup under those circumstances.

The Redskins met with Grossman’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, this week in Phoenix.
