RICHMOND — With a rookie starting opposite him — at least for the time being — and two young veterans and another rookie all behind him on the depth chart, veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall has quite a few people looking at him for answers.
A 10-year veteran now in his fourth season in Jim Haslett’s system, Hall is the natural leader of the cornerback unit. Seventh-year veteran Josh Wilson (entering his third season in the system) is another, but for the time being, he is working his way back from shoulder surgery.
Hall is excited to have a playmaking corner like second-round draft pick David Amerson, who in 2011 recorded 13 interceptions at N.C. State, in the fold. Amerson said he has leaned heavily on Hall as he learns the scheme. Richard Crawford returns for a second season with the team and is continuing his development process. Meanwhile, free agent addition E.J. Biggers and Chase Minnifield (who missed his rookie year with knee surgery) both are playing catch-up.
Hall understands that as the elder statesman, he must provide leadership, but his goal is to lead by example. The added responsibility has given Hall an additional sense of motivation, because as a leader, he realizes he can’t afford to slack off if he’s to make sure that a rookie like Amerson doesn’t as well.
“I’ve kind of seen [Amerson] coasting in some [offseason] practices, and we’ve tried to correct it in the film room,” Hall said. “I stood up and told Haz, ‘I can’t even really be mad at him, because I was doing the same thing.’ So, the next day, I tried to go out there, set the tempo and set the tone, and the guys followed. So, you just have to lead by example and try to do things the right way every single play. That’s what we as a team have to do: get better every day, and if you’re not, you’re not getting better.”
