RICHMOND—Coach Mike Shanahan had his players in full pads, including knee and thigh pads, for the Washington Redskins training-camp practice Saturday.

That was a warmup for the players, with the NFL putting a rule into effect this season requiring players to wear thigh and knee pads during games.

“We just want to put them in a situation, before we play our first game, exactly what the rules are,” Shanahan said. “Most of the guys don’t feel a bit different. I think some of the veteran players who aren’t used to wearing [those] pads at all have a little adjustment to make. But they get used to it pretty quick.”

Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo said: “It felt great. We haven’t worn practice pants, I don’t think I’ve worn it since I’ve been a Redskin. It feels good to come out here and get used to the new equipment because that’s what we have to wear—primarily myself, I didn’t wear them—but just try to get acclimated to the new rules this year.”

But some grumbling about the new requirement continues. During warmups on the field Saturday, one player declared, “[Expletive] these knee pads!”
