RICHMOND — The Washington Redskins’ preseason opener Thursday night in Tennessee will provide the first chance for the three key rookies in their secondary — cornerback David Amerson and safeties Bacarri Rambo and Phillip Thomas — to show what they can do under NFL game conditions.

All are likely to receive substantial playing time while the front-line players remain on the field.

“I can’t wait to see them in a live game,” said Redskins veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who’s not scheduled to play against the Titans. “We don’t do a lot of tackling and things like that [in training-camp practices]. We fly around and make plays. But these guys have kind of got accustomed to our receivers.

So this will let us know kind of game situations what it’s gonna be like week in and week out with a different set of receivers. Like I said, I can’t wait to see these guys in the game to actually see how they communicate, how they play, how they hit, how they take getting beat, how they take making a play and just bouncing back and keeping it going.”

The Redskins could lean heavily on the rookies as they try to improve what was the league’s 30th-ranked pass defense last season.

“I’m excited,” said Rambo, who has practiced with the starting defense throughout training camp. “I’ll probably be nervous the first one or two plays. But after that, I’m just gonna go out there and have fun and just play the game how it’s supposed to be played.”
