RICHMOND – Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said X-rays conducted on the injured left foot of rookie safety Phillip Thomas ruled out the possibility of any broken bones. Thomas’s status will be day-to-day.

Thomas left the first quarter of Thursday’s preseason game in Nashville after suffering an injury to his right shoulder and his left foot. Thomas was trying to make a tackle on the play. After the collision, in which he was hit on both sides by offensive players, Thomas got up gingerly, took a few steps and then collapsed.

He was checked on the sideline. His shoulder injury wound up not being serious, but he couldn’t return to action because of the foot injury, which was diagnosed as a “mid-foot sprain.”

The Redskins had Friday off, and would have practiced Saturday, but a storm canceled those plans.

Shanahan said he doesn’t know how long Thomas – a fourth-round pick out of Fresno State – will be sidelined.

“He’s a little sore right now. Mid-foot. I can’t tell you how long it’s going to be, but it’ll probably be a few days,” Shanahan said.

Meanwhile, Shanahan said the status of backup linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough, who suffered a separated shoulder in Thursday’s game, remains up in the air as well.

“Any time you have a separation of the shoulder, I’ve seen guys come back in a few days, or a couple weeks,” Shanahan said. “I think we’ll have a better idea in a few days.”

Wide receiver Donte Stallworth aggravated a strained left hamstring on Thursday and will take some time off to let it heal. Shanahan said that Stallworth likely won’t play in their next preseason game, Aug. 19 against Pittsburgh. The coach thought that the Aug. 24 game against Buffalo was more likely for Stallworth.

Rookie tight end Jordan Reed, who has missed two practices and Thursday’s game with a bruise on the top of his foot, wouldn’t have been able to practice on Saturday, Shanahan said. He will continue to be monitored on a daily basis.
