RICHMOND – Torrential downpours forced the Redskins to cancel Saturday afternoon’s practice session at the Bon Secours training center.

Saturday’s 2 p.m. session was the only practice scheduled for the day. It would have been the team’s first practice since Thursday’s 22-21 preseason win over Tennessee.

Roughly a half-hour before the practice was slated to start, dark clouds rolled in and lightning was spotted. Officials told the handful of players that had made it out to the fields to head back to the locker room. Fans were told to get under tents or leave. The bulk of them left as it began to rain. The storm lasted roughly an hour.

The fields were too wet for the Redskins to practice on them after the storm.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Saturday’s rainout will not force him to modify practice plans for next week, when the team is scheduled to return to action on Monday. Shanahan actually said the canceled practice was a blessing in disguise.

“I think the Guy Upstairs kinda took care of us today, because I wasn’t sure if we should practice today,” Shanahan said. “I felt we were a little sore as a football team. We needed the extra day to rest up. I’m kind of glad that this happened.”

The schedule for the remainder of training camp is as follows:

Sunday, Aug. 11: Off

Monday, Aug. 12: 10 a.m. walk-through, 3:20 p.m. practice

Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 13-15: 12:40 p.m. practice

Friday, Aug. 16: 9:45 a.m. practice
