RICHMOND — Rookie linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough said that he tore the labrum in his right shoulder and will miss the entire season.

Signed this spring as an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State, Kimbrough hoped to make the roster as a backup inside linebacker. The 5-foot-11, 240-pounder had three tackles in Thursday’s preseason opener, but left the game with what originally was described by Coach Mike Shanahan as a separated right shoulder.

Shanahan said on Saturday that Kimbrough’s prognosis was not yet known. However, Kimbrough watched Monday morning’s walk-through in shorts and a T-shirt, and afterwards, said that he had torn his labrum.

He was told that following surgery, he could expect a four-to-five month recovery time.

“It’s real unfortunate because I felt like I was playing well and picking up the defense,” Kimbrough said. “But I just have to keep pushing, and rehab it and hopefully next year I can compete for another spot again. Hopefully I get the surgery as soon as possible so I can get on my rehab schedule and come back next year better than ever.”

Kimbrough is the second inside linebacker lost to season-ending surgery. Second-year pro Keenan Robinson tore a pectoral muscle early in camp and last week had surgery. He is expected to require as many as five months to recover as well.

The reserve jobs behind starting inside linebackers London Fletcher and Perry Riley remain up for grabs. Roddrick Muckelroy and Bryan Kehl had alternated at the ‘mike’ linebacker spot behind Fletcher. Muckelroy left Thursday’s game with his shoulder wrapped in ice, and he didn’t take part in Monday’s walk-through. The Redskins signed veteran Nick Barnett to a one-year deal on Aug. 1, but he has only taken part in individual drills, thus far, and didn’t play in last week’s preseason opener. Rookie Will Compton, another undrafted player, saw time at ‘jack’ linebacker on Thursday, recording one tackle.
