RICHMOND — The Redskins released wide receiver Devery Henderson, who signed with the team this offseason and hoped to earn a roster spot at a crowded position.

Henderson left the team on an excused absence last week after a death in his immediate family. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday evening that he expected Henderson to return to the practice field on Wednesday.

The circumstances regarding the change in plans and Henderson’s release were not clear, but a person with knowledge of the situation said that the move didn’t have anything to do with Henderson’s absence for the funeral.

Wide receivers Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, Santana Moss, Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson seem to have roster spots locked up. Dez Briscoe, Donte Stallworth, Lance Lewis, Chip Reeves, Skye Dawson and Nick Williams all are competing for one, or possibly two remaining roster spots.

The Redskins currently have 87 players on the roster. The limit is 90. The team has yet to place rookie safety Phillip Thomas (Lisfranc sprain), second-year linebacker Keenan Robinson (torn pectoral muscle) or rookie linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough (torn labrum) on injured reserve, although they all will or have had season-ending surgery.

The league-mandated first round of roster cuts — down to 75 players — isn’t due until after the third preseason game. The final cuts — down to 53 players — are due Friday, Aug. 30.
