With interim starter Kirk Cousins not expected to play Saturday as he nurses a sprained right foot, 11th-year veteran Rex Grossman could be in line to start against the Buffalo Bills and log extensive snaps before making way for fourth-string quarterback Pat White.

Related: White doesn’t know how much he’ll play on Saturday

Grossman has played in 54 games in his NFL career, starting 47 of them, and he appears to a significant leg up on White for a roster spot. The final outcome of the third preseason game matters not. And Grossman knows that when both Robert Griffin III and Cousins return to action, he will return to his third-string role.

But he still approaches Saturday with purpose.

Typically, in a third preseason game, the first team plays into the third quarter. That could mean significant game-time for Grossman, who in two preseason games has completed a total of 20 of 37 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Grossman said he hasn’t yet received word on how much he will play.

“Any time you’ve got a chance to show where you’re at presently – and everyone’s seen a lot of tape on me – but you can always strive to get better, and you want to establish yourself every year and show you get better,” Grossman said. “It’s another opportunity to play. I don’t know how much I’m going to play, but that’s my mind-set, preseason or regular season.”
