Right tackle competition over before it ever really began?

The competition for the Redskins’ starting job at right tackle could be over before it ever really began.

Tyler Polumbus, last season’s starter, has continued to work with the first-team offense throughout training camp and the preseason. And with the team’s starters expected to sit out Thursday night’s preseason finale at Tampa, there are no indications that a last-minute change is in store.

A competition seemed possible when the Redskins re-signed Polumbus as a free agent in the offseason but also signed two players with considerable NFL starting experience, Tony Pashos and Jeremy Trueblood. Pashos has been ahead of Trueblood for the backup job, but so far the coaches have showed no signs that they’ve given serious consideration to moving Pashos ahead of Polumbus.

Pashos is working his way back after being out of the league last season as he recovered from a ruptured tendon in his foot. Coaches say they believe from what they’ve seen of Pashos that he’s healthy. He potentially still could push Polumbus for playing time at some point, after he’s done knocking all the rust off his game and adjusts fully to the Redskins’ offensive system. First, he must secure a spot on the season-opening roster, with NFL teams required to be down to 53 players next weekend.
