Linebacker Brian Orakpo said Thursday he thinks he has played reasonably well in the early stages of this season in his return to the Washington Redskins’ lineup after missing all but two games last season because of a torn pectoral muscle. But the Redskins’ overall defensive struggles have overshadowed that, Orakpo said.

“I thought it’s been pretty good,” he said. “We’ve been playing very well, getting a lot of pressure. But at the same time, overall we all consider as a unit and the whole unit is not doing well. So it really doesn’t matter how I’m playing or how other individuals are playing. We’ve just got to play together and make everybody look good.”

Orakpo had a sack last Sunday at Green Bay. Fellow outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan had two sacks in that game, and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said both played well even amid a poor defensive performance.

“I think he’s playing excellent football,” Haslett said of Kerrigan. “I thought him and ‘Rak both played, even as bad as the game was last week, those two, they played about as well as you’re gonna get from a pass-rush standpoint and the run game. Those two guys have been outstanding. Again, there’s areas they can improve in, and all of us, and they will. But I thought they did a nice job in those two areas.”
