Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan says he’s hoping he’s received warmly in Denver this weekend (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)

Mike Shanahan says he’s expecting a positive reaction from the crowd in Denver when he coaches the Washington Redskins there Sunday against the Broncos, the franchise he once coached to two Super Bowl titles.

“I think it will be very positive because you have 21 years and you have a lot of great memories,” Shanahan said Monday. “So I think it’ll be fun going back there, getting a chance, spending all those years in one place. I’m sure hoping I don’t get booed.”

Shanahan said he’s looking forward to the experience.

“I think any time you’re at a place for 21 years, that’s quite a long time, I think,” he said. “In football years, that doesn’t happen very often. So yeah, it’s been where we raised our kids. It’s head coach there for 14 years, assistant for seven. You’ve got a lot of great friends there. You look forward to that type of rivalry. Obviously you always want to play your best. I’m looking forward to playing there.”

The Redskins must face quarterback Peyton Manning and the Broncos as they come off their first loss of the season Sunday night in Indianapolis.

“The first thing you do is prepare for the game. …We all know how talented they are,” Shanahan said. “Of course they’re gonna be hungry, after coming off of a loss. We’re gonna get their best shot. So we’re looking forward to it ourselves.”
