Two-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher Von Miller returned to action for the Denver Broncos last week following a six-game suspension, meaning Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams will draw yet another challenging matchup today.
Williams, who has already faced elite pass-rushers DeMarcus Ware, Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers this season and has yet to surrender a sack, shook his head when asked about Miller.
“I can’t get a week off,” Williams, a Pro Bowl player himself, said in mock frustration before grinning. “Every week. Every week. But I like challenges. Von Miller is a great player, I have yet to face him in the NFL, so it’s going to be a heck of a matchup.”
This will mark the first time that Miller and Williams have faced since college, when Williams, a junior at the time, got the best of a freshman Miller in a 45-14 Oklahoma victory over Texas A&M.
That matchup has no bearing on this meeting, however, Williams says.
Miller, who racked up 18.5 sacks last season and 11.5 as a rookie, didn’t record a sack lasts week in his first game back from suspension. But Williams said he doesn’t see a drop-off or rust in his opponent’s game.
“I don’t think there’s much rush to knock off as a pass-rusher,” Williams said. “Either you’ve got it or you don’t. Looked like he has the same burst as last year.”
Unlike Ware and Peppers, Miller isn’t the long, lean pass-rusher type. But although smaller, the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder remains hard to stop.
“He’s so hard to get your hands on, and he’s surprisingly strong. I think that’s what catches a lot of people off guard, because he’s so strong on the bull rush,” Williams said. “You have to find a way to get your hands on him early. If you let him get a head of steam where he can open up all the moves, it’ll be a long day.”
Further breaking down Miller’s game, Williams said, “When I look at him, I just see him going off your weakness, so if you are slow on him, he’ll jump around the edge, if you try to get a jump on him, he’ll go to the inside. If you’re sitting up high, he’ll bull-rush you. So, he’s got a triple-threat going on.”
