Linebacker Brian Orakpo has a modest three sacks in the Washington Redskins’ first eight games of the season, entering Thursday night’s contest at Minnesota. But Orakpo says he’s not overly concerned.
“I’m not worried about sack numbers,” he said this week. “Sack numbers are gonna come. You put a lot of pressure, a lot of [quarterback] hits, and they’ll come.”
Orakpo said he believes he’s playing well overall.
“It’s hard,” he said. “From a fans’ perspective, they look at it and, ‘This guy [stinks].’ But from around the league and the coaches, everybody knows what a guy brings to the table. And sometimes it’s not there. Sacks are so hard to get, man. It’s just so hard. Everything has to be perfect. You can have great moves and get there but somebody may lose contain or a quarterback may see a hole and get out. Things just haven’t been in our favor to get these big sack numbers. But we’ve just got to keep hunting and they’ll come. I’m not too much worried about it.”
Asked how he and his fellow outside linebackers evaluate their play, Orakpo said: “Just being effective. Making sure the quarterback knows we’re there. From an outside ‘backers’ perspective, we do a lot more than just rush. So everything correlates to one another, and I think me and Ryan [Kerrigan] and the rest of the guys — Rob Jackson and [Darryl] Tapp — we’re doing a phenomenal job.”
