The Washington Redskins received discouraging news Monday on wide receiver Leonard Hankerson’s knee injury, which could lead Coach Mike Shanahan into an awkward lineup decision.

Shanahan said Hankerson injured the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee during Sunday’s loss at Philadelphia, and MRI exam results were negative positive. The coach said it wouldn’t be known for a couple days whether the injury would require surgery, which would end Hankerson’s season.

If that’s the case, Shanahan would have to consider re-installing Joshua Morgan into the starting lineup as Hankerson’s replacement at the “Z” receiver position – a few days after deactivating Morgan, a Washington native who joined his hometown team last year as a free agent.

Morgan seemed disappointed by the decision to make him inactive against the Eagles, telling a Post reporter after the game: “Coach said I can’t play football, and I can’t talk.”

Shanahan said cornerback E.J. Biggers and defensive end Stephen Bowen also underwent MRI exams after suffering right knee injuries against the Eagles, but each of those results were negative. Both players, Shanahan said, were sore, but their injuries weren’t believed to be serious.

Rookie tight end Jordan Reed, one of quarterback Robert Griffin III’s most dependable targets this season, sustained a concussion Sunday. Shanahan said Reed was undergoing the normal concussion protocol, and it won’t be known until later in the week if he’ll play Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers.
