Redskins unveil re-sodded playing surface versus 49ers

An improved playing surface greeted the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers Monday night as the team opted earlier this month to re-sod FedEx Field.

The poor conditions of the playing surface late last season, and the backlash that ensued, prompted Redskins officials to schedule the re-sodding job midway through for the first time.

Shortly after the Nov. 3 overtime win over the San Diego Chargers, workers began ripping up the middle strip of turf between the numbers.

Because two road games followed, this marks the first time that the Redskins will have played on the new surface.

Last Wednesday when asked about the field, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III said the re-sodding was a welcome move.

“I think everybody is appreciative of the way they changed,” Griffin said. “It looks better. Your footing is better. We’ll get to go play some fast, physical football.”
