Mike Shanahan: Sideline track at FedEx Field a hazard

Robert Griffin III took a spill on the rubber track behind the bench at FedEx Field.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said that the team needs to do something about the rubberized track at the back of the sidelines at FedEx Field so players aren’t at risk of injury.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III took a spill on the surface when his momentum carried him toward the stands as he ran out of bounds at the end of a run during Sunday night’s game against the Giants. Griffin’s cleats slipped on the surface, and his feet went out from under him. The crowd of 75,220 fans let out a collective, audible gasp as the quarterback went down. He was helped up and then he returned to the game without missing a play.

“That was bad,” Griffin said after the game. “We’ve got to get that changed or something over there. [I was] just going off to the side, slipped a little bit, nasty fall, but you get up and play football. It’s a physical sport even if you’re having to take on the side of the field as well.”

Shanahan couldn’t see what happened during the game. But he did when he went back and watched the film on Monday. He agreed with Griffin.

“That was a fall. That was probably the best hit of the whole day,” Shanahan said. “We’ve got to do something because somebody can seriously get hurt right there.”

Asked what purpose the track, which was installed over the offseason, was intended to serve, Shanahan said, “I have no idea.”
