Defensive Stephen Bowen had microfracture surgery on his right knee Tuesday night and now faces a six-month recovery time, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said.

Bowen tore the posterior cruciate ligament in the same knee earlier this season, and then in Week 11 further injured the knee. The team placed him on injured reserve last week after it was learned that he would need surgery to correct the problem.

Bowen is currently in the third year of a five-year, $27.5 million deal. He turns 30 in March, but Shanahan said that he has confidence that the defensive end can make a full recovery.

“Stephen is a worker, and it’s always unfortunate to have a surgery like that, but he’s young, he’s a worker. So, I’m sure he’ll bounce back very quickly,” Shanahan said.
