The Washington Redskins interviewed Jim Caldwell for their head coaching job Sunday.

The team confirmed the interview.

Caldwell, the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts who is now the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, met with Redskins officials at the team’s headquarters in Ashburn.

He also is a candidate for the Detroit Lions’ head coaching vacancy. Caldwell interviewed Friday with the Lions.  Redskins officials wanted to meet with him last week but Caldwell didn’t want to rush through multiple interviews.

He worked with Peyton Manning as the quarterbacks coach in Indianapolis and led the Colts to a Super Bowl appearance in his first season as head coach. He was fired after his third season in 2011 and has been with the Ravens the past two seasons.

Caldwell became the fourth candidate known to have interviewed with the Redskins following Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. The Redskins met with McDermott on Saturday in Charlotte.

New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is scheduled to be interviewed Monday in Ashburn. The Redskins potentially will schedule a series of interviews this week with candidates who coached in first-round NFL playoff games Sunday, including offensive coordinators Ken Whisenhunt of San Diego, Greg Roman of San Francisco and Jay Gruden of Cincinnati, plus Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and offensive assistant Hue Jackson. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, the group that works with the NFL to promote diversity in hiring, recommended to the Redskins that they consider Caldwell and Jackson.
