For the second time since being fired as offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins, Kyle Shanahan was passed over for an offensive coordinator job for which he’d interviewed.

The Baltimore Ravens hired Gary Kubiak, the former head coach of the Houston Texans, as their offensive coordinator Monday. Shanahan had interviewed with the Ravens for the position, which became vacant when Jim Caldwell was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Shanahan previously interviewed for the Miami Dolphins’ offensive coordinator job. But the Dolphins hired Bill Lazor instead. Shanahan was fired by the Redskins along with his father Mike, the team’s head coach, following a 3-13 season. Kyle Shanahan previously was Kubiak’s offensive coordinator with the Texans.

Kubiak was fired by the Texans in December. Seated alongside Ravens Coach John Harbaugh at his introductory news conference Monday at the Ravens’ headquarters, Kubiak said: “For me to get back to work with him and this organization, I can’t tell you how excited I am.”

Harbaugh said: “I think we’ve got a chance to build the best offensive staff in the National Football League. … Gary Kubiak was on the list from the beginning. … We were able to finish it up this weekend.”

The Ravens also hired former Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison as their quarterbacks coach.

Harbaugh said the team could make further changes to its offensive coaching staff. It’s not clear if Kyle Shanahan still could be under consideration to join Kubiak.

“We’ll see how it shakes out in the next couple days,” Harbaugh said.

Shanahan also has been mentioned as a possible offensive coordinator candidate for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns hired Mike Pettine, formerly the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, as their head coach last week.

Update, 4:27 p.m.

Shanahan is not expected to join the Ravens’ staff, according to one person familiar with the situation.
