Defensive end Jason Hatcher will have an MRI exam on one of his knees after experiencing some pain and swelling, coach Jay Gruden said on Tuesday. Hatcher – one of Washington’s high-profile free agent additions this offseason – will miss all of the team’s mandatory minicamp in hopes of returning to action at the start of training camp on July 24.

The Redskins kicked off their final minicamp of the offseason on Tuesday morning, and are scheduled to practice Wednesday and Thursday before breaking for the next month. Hatcher watched practice while in his jersey.

Gruden said it wasn’t clear exactly when Hatcher injured his knee. He had taken part in the bulk of the 10 practice sessions that preceded this week’s minicamp. (He missed a portion of last week’s session for a family function). The coach said that the injury didn’t cause serious concern, however.

“He just said he had a little bit of pain, a little bit of swelling,” Gruden said. “So, we’re going to make sure we do the proper procedure as far as getting him checked out – MRI, X-ray and all that good stuff and make sure he’s good.”

Meanwhile, outside linebacker Brian Orakpo missed Tuesday’s practice with illness. The coach said that it’s believed that Orakpo has strep throat, but that he possibly could practice on Wednesday.

Defensive lineman Barry Cofield took part in positional drills for a second straight week, but didn’t do team drills as he continues to come back from hernia surgery. Cornerbacks Richard Crawford (knee surgery) and Tracy Porter (shoulder surgery) both continued to work on the side, as did defensive end Stephen Bowen (knee surgery) and wideout Leonard Hankerson (knee surgery).

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson practiced fully and said his hamstring is about “90 percent” healed.
