RICHMOND — The Washington Redskins got their morning practice session in on Day 1 of training camp. But thunderstorms expected to hit the Richmond area around the same time as the 4 p.m walk-through have caused the team move the hour-long session indoors to the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

“We’re expecting a big rain storm here, maybe some lightning, so, being that it’s a walk-through, we can get enough done,” said Coach Jay Gruden, who on his first day of camp practices had to call two audibles.

In the morning, the start time of the practice session got pushed back roughly half an hour because of a morning downpour. The rain ended midway through the practice, but dark clouds rolled in shortly before 4 p.m., and weather forecasters predicted the storms and also issued a nearby tornado warning, prompting the second modification of plans. Half an hour after Gruden spoke, heavy rains began.

Gruden still felt relatively satisfied with his team’s first day of camp, though.

“We were real fortunate,” Gruden said. “Other than the wet ball drill — dropping some balls and fumbling a couple of snaps — we were able to get all the reps in, so we had a lot of learning, so we could get accomplished on tape, so we were very fortunate to get every play in.”

Gruden acknowledged that quarterback Robert Griffin III didn’t have his best practice, but he attributed some of the poorly thrown passes to the wet balls.

“Robert was a little erratic,” Griffin said before later adding, “he’ll be the first guy to tell you he needs to improve. I’ll be the second.”
