RICHMOND – The Redskins announced that they have waived outside linebacker Brandon Jenkins a year after drafting him in the fifth round out of Florida State, and removed offensive lineman Maurice Hurt from the active/non-football injury list.
Jenkins struggled mightily in his rookie season and struggled to get on the field. He dressed for only five games and recorded one tackle. An inability to contribute on special teams also made it hard for Jenkins to earn playing time.
He had made improvements during the offseason program, according to outside linebackers coach Brian Baker. But Jenkins appeared to regress here in training camp, where he struggled to win one-on-one matchups. Starters Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan lead the way at right and left outside linebacker, respectively, and this year’s second-round pick Trent Murphy, who has impressed, and veteran Rob Jackson both ranked higher on the depth chart than Jenkins. Washington also has rookie Gabe Miller and second-year player Adrian Robinson competing for a roster spot at outside linebacker.
Hurt, entering his fifth year and seemingly a long shot to make the roster, opened camp on the non-football injury list because he performed poorly on his physical conditioning test. He missed all of last season because of poor conditioning and had spent the offseason program as the fourth-string right tackle. Hurt, who has experience at guard, will try to make up for lost time and convince coaches that he does in fact have something to offer. But to do so, he’ll have to beat out rookie Morgan Moses and second-year pro Tom Compton, who both are competing at right tackle. Rookie Spencer Long and third-year players Josh LeRibeus, Adam Gettis and Kevin Kowalski rank higher on the guard depth chart as well.
Washington currently has 86 players on the active roster and three on the PUP list (defensive ends Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen and receiver Leonard Hankerson). They have one open spot and are expected to work out candidates to fill Jenkins’s roster spot.
Washington’s second practice on Day 4 begins at 4:15 p.m. in Richmond. Here’s our camp guide.
