RICHMOND – Second-year cornerback David Amerson was pleased to hear that Coach Jay Gruden complimented him the other day. Gruden likes confident players, and Amerson has “swag,” Gruden said.

Maintaining his confidence will be important for Amerson, who’s expected to have a key role this season. Amerson is slated to start in Week 1 opposite top corner DeAngelo Hall. The Redskins want Amerson to provide stability at his position. That’s what he wants, too.

“Sometimes you’re going to get beat. Sometimes you’re gonna miss a tackle. Man, it’s real out there on the edge,” Amerson said. Cornerback “is one of the hardest positions in the league. You definitely have to have some pit bull about yourself. … I do.”

Throughout the offseason program, Amerson worked hard at becoming stronger and improving his technique. Gruden and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett are pleased with his development. “I’m glad [Gruden] thinks highly of me,” Amerson said.

As a rookie last season, Amerson leaned on Hall. In addition to still seeking Hall’s counsel, Amerson also has benefited from working with safety Ryan Clark, who returned to the team after eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is in his 13th season.

“When you’ve played that long, you’ve done seen it all and done it all,” Amerson said of Clark. “You can ask him questions. He’s vocal [on the field]. Very vocal.

“Sometimes you might forget something during a play. He’s always reminding you, always talking. It’s a big help back there.”
