RICHMOND – The Washington Redskins signed free agent safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith and waived cornerback Peyton Thompson on Saturday.

Thompson, a second-year pro, struggled in pass coverage during Washington’s preseason victory over the New England Patriots.

Cromartie-Smith entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2010 spent time on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad and active roster and over the course of four seasons. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound defensive back appeared in 10 games, recording four tackles.

Cromartie-Smith played collegiately at UTEP, where he started 34 of 46 games.

Cromartie-Smith is the cousin of Cardinals cornerback Antonio Cromartie and Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
