Bowen was owed $4.4 million this season and was set to count $7 million against the salary cap. General Manager Bruce Allen said last week that the team had roughly $2 million in cap space.
It wasn’t immediately clear how much the Redskins saved by re-working Bowen’s contract.
Bowen had his 2013 season cut short after he injured his knee and needed microfracture surgery to repair it. He has spent the offseason and this early part of training camp in the preseason rehabbing. Bowen currently is on the physically unable to perform list.
Bowen joined the Redskins in 2010 as a free agent from Dallas. He started at right end the last three years. Washington this offseason signed another former Cowboy, Jason Hatcher, with plans of making him their new starting right end.
ESPN first reported news of Bowen’s contract restructuring.
