Coach Jay Gruden said he plans to speak with quarterback Robert Griffin III, who continued to make poor decisions while running in the first half of Monday night’s 24-23 preseason victory over the Cleveland Browns at FedEx Field.

Instead of utilizing a protective slide in the first quarter, Griffin took on multiple would-be tacklers along the Browns’ sideline. He was hit three times before falling out of bounds. Griffin, who has undergone reconstructive knee surgery twice, also trapped his right leg while sliding awkwardly once.

“It’s something we have to continue to talk to him about, how important he is to this team and this franchise,” Gruden said. “When he get out of the pocket, he needs to protect himself. … It’s a 16-game season with great talent across the league. He’s got to pick his shots and learn to get down a little bit better.”

Griffin completed six of eight passes for 112 yards. He connected with Andre Roberts for a 49-yard gain. But he also had two false-start penalties and made a poor decision on a pass Browns standout cornerback Joe Haden intercepted and returned 37 yards.

“He threw the ball late on an out route to DeSean [Jackson],” Gruden said. “Joe Haden is one of the top corners in the NFL. He’ll make you pay. He saw it and knew it right away.

“I’m glad it happened now. I wish it would have never happened. But it’s something that he can obviously learn from.”
