Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman received a hefty fine for a hit that drew an unnecessary roughness penalty, but it had nothing to do with his rival Odell Beckham Jr.

The NFL, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, fined Norman $48,620 for hitting another Giants receiver, Sterling Shepard, just after Shepard made a catch over the middle in last Sunday’s 29-27 Redskins win.

Officials threw their flags, calling Norman for a “hit to the helmet of a defenseless receiver.” Norman hit Shepard with his shoulder, a split second after Shepard reeled in the 12-yard catch.

An additional 15 yards, because of the penalty, then moved the ball to the Washington 48-yard line.
