The Washington Redskins have interviewed two candidates for their vacant defensive backs coaching position, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Jay Gruden interviewed long-time NFL assistant Tim Lewis and former Chicago Bears safety Chris Harris for the position in the past week.

Lewis coached the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive backs coach in 2015 but was out of football in 2016. Before that, Lewis held the secondary coach positions with the Falcons (2010-14), Seahawks (2009) and Panthers (2007-08). Lewis was the Giants’ defensive coordinator from 2004 through 2006 and the Steelers’ defensive coordinator from 2000 through 2003. A first-round pick of the Packers in 1983, Lewis spent four seasons in the NFL as a cornerback.

Harris has less experience as a coach but is viewed around the league as a rising talent. He coached the Chargers’ defensive backs in 2016 and from 2013 to 2014 served as defensive quality control assistant for the Bears.

Harris spent eight seasons in the NFL as a safety. He earned second-team all-pro status with the Bears in 2010, when he recorded five interceptions. Harris concluded his career with Jacksonville in 2012 and also spent four seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

The Redskins are seeking a replacement for Perry Fewell, whom Gruden dismissed after two seasons shortly after the 2016 campaign ended.

Gruden and the Redskins had aimed to promote assistant defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant to defensive backs coach, but negotiations stalled, and Pleasant and team officials have agreed to part ways.
