Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman star in "Identity Thief." /Bob Mahoney

Only two new movies are released in area theaters this week: "Side Effects," which Steven Soderbergh has announced will be his last theatrical feature film, and "Identity Thief," the road trip comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. Here's what the Post critics had to say about this week's slim selection:

** "Side Effects" (R) "Like a gel cap in a sip of orange juice, the psycho-pharmacological thriller 'Side Effects' goes down easily, even if its long-term impact turns out to be barely discernible." -- Ann Hornaday

* "Identity Thief" (PG-13) "“Identity Thief” turns out to be not so much a major drag as a minor irritant, the kind of instantly forgettable nothing-burger for which the early months have become notorious." -- Ann Hornaday
