An earlier version of this post listed March 2 as the opening date for the Gryphon. The opening has been postponed until March 13.

The Dupont Circle neighborhood lineup of sports bars is about to get even more powerful: The Gryphon, a new "upscale gastropub" in the former Heritage India space at 1337 Connecticut Ave. NW is set to open March 13. And when it does, you might want to bring along shoulder pads or a helmet, because the 5,000-square-foot space sounds like it'll be a full-body experience.

For your eyes and ears, 31 televisions will show sports from around the globe. And there'll be a DJ booth, too, because that's de rigeur for experiential entertainment complexes these days -- Public Bar and Barcode both have them. It's unclear how this beefed-up man cave aesthetic will mesh with what the Gryphon's press release calls "gaming accents and vintage decor [evoking] the grand, private lounges of the 1920s and 30s," but it'll be something to look at one way or another.

For your stomach, chef Joseph Evans of U Street's Lost Society will do the cooking. But remember: Because the Gryphon is a gastropub, your buffalo wings and burgers will be chili-and-soy gryphon wings and braised short ribs instead.

For your sense of imagination and wonder, there's the mascot, the gryphon, a legendary half-lion, half-eagle creature. "Just as the being is known for guarding treasure, so too will the Gryphon cultivate a uniquely warm and majestic experience for its guests."
