The 2013 Shaw restaurant boom continues early next week with Thally, an American restaurant from former Cork and New Heights chef Ron Tanaka. The 70-seat restaurant at 1316 Ninth St. NW is named for the former Tally-Ho Stables in Naylor Court, as well as partner Sherman Outhuok's seven-year-old daughter, Thalia (The "h" in Thally, by the way, is silent). Look for an opening on or around Aug. 27, according to a press release.

"There's a whimsical approach to [Tanaka's] food," says Outhuok. "But he's got a serious side."

Expect an elegant but unpretentious menu of seasonal modern cuisine. Starters, $8-$10, will include a salad of grilled peaches and prosciutto atop bibb lettuce, a crab roulette and a carnitas-topped Mexican sope. For entrees, about $17-$28, Tanaka is grilling branzino and T-Bone and Delmonico steaks, with sides like eggplant caponata and mustard-brined pinto bean puree. They're still working on a dessert menu, but Outhouk says he expects it will include Pitango gelato and sorbet.

A 14-seat bar will offer cocktails created by Outhuok and a list of 24 wines by the glass, six of which will rotate weekly. There will be 10 craft beers and two ciders on draft and all of the sodas, from lemon-lime to lavender, will be house-made. At happy hour, everything by the glass will be $2 off. Outhouk's also hoping to host lemoncello-making classes.

Thally's kitchen will serve Tuesday-Sunday from 5 to 11 p.m. with the bar open until 11:30 p.m. While he plans to roll out a lunch menu (and outdoor seating) at a later date, Outhouk says he has no plans for brunch -- he'd prefer to give his staff a chance to get some rest.
