Eat fast and win free tacos for a year at Smoke and Barrel

For some people, free tacos for a year would be as good as winning the lottery. And if you'd like to get your hands on 12 months of tacos from Smoke and Barrel, all you have to do is devour six pork or tofu tacos faster than nine other people.

The "Little Man, Big Mouth" taco eating contest returns to the Adams Morgan barbecue joint on Thursday, Sept. 19. As always, it's part of Gnome Week, a promotional campaign from the gnome-loving Belgian brewers Brasserie d'Achouffe, makers of La Chouffe.

During last year's event, contestants were given 10 tacos to consume, but Smoke and Barrel beer director Jace Gonnerman says that proved to be too many, as the winner took almost 10 minutes to finish. This year, contestants will be given only six tacos, "I think three or four minutes is what it will take to win," Gonnerman says.

If you'd like a chance to show off your taco-eating prowess, you can sign up at the bar over the next week, or just show up at Smoke and Barrel on Sept. 19. (The contest starts at 8:30 p.m. so arrive early.) Due to a high level of interest, spots will not be filled on a first-come, first-served basis; 10 names for each division will be chosen from the list of people who register. The winners will receive free tacos every Tuesday – Smoke and Barrel's dedicated taco night – for a year. That includes Smoke and Barrel's tasty smoky brisket tacos.

This is just one of the events Gonnerman has planned for Gnome Week: From Wednesday through Saturday, the bar will feature La Chouffe, the Scottish-style McChouffe and the Belgian IPA Houblon Chouffe on tap, with different specials each night.
