Thursday, Oct. 24 is Food Day, a nationwide movement started in 2011 by the Center for Science in the Public Interest to promote healthy, affordable and sustainably produced food. The nonprofit has a list of suggested restaurants to visit year-round — all Eat REAL Certified. Some of the area spots that make the cut include Founding Farmers, Busboys and Poets, Commissary, Rito Loco, Meridian Pint and Brasserie Beck.

Stop by the nonprofit arts organization BloomBars at 3222 11th St. NW for a free 7 p.m. screening and discussion of "Symphony of Soil." The documentary is all about soil and its role in environmental challenges.
Nibble on hot cider and cookies at GW Square (911 23rd St. NW near Foggy Bottom) for "Food=Community: An Interactive Panel Discussion" at 5:30 p.m. Lead by John Murphy, director of kitchen operations at the nonprofit Miriam’s Kitchen, the panel will include local chefs Todd Gray and Michael James, along with James Beard Foundation award winner Gus Schumacher and Ann Yonkers from FreshFarm Markets. The event is free and open to the public.
Head to YMCA Anthony Bowen from 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the Food Day Festival with food and cooking demos for kids and adults, food crafts, snacks, recipes and more.
Help fundraise for the United Community Ministries Food Pantry in Alexandria at 6:30 p.m. during a screening of "A Place at the Table," a documentary about hunger in America. Bring a a canned or packaged food item to donate. The screening takes place at Teaism in Old Town at 682 N St Asaph St.
