Stoney's on L Street (Margaret Ely/The Washington Post). Stoney's on L Street (Margaret Ely/The Washington Post).

If you've ever wished Stoney's was bigger, brighter and more sterile, you're in luck: Today was the grand opening of the new Stoney's at 2101 L St. NW. It's the twin (or cousin?) to the restaurant's P Street NW location, and its reputation precedes it: By noon today, Stoney's on L was already packed.

So what's new? As far as food goes, not much except presentation. You won't get a mound of fries piled next to your sandwich, but rather stacked in a small metal cup on a rectangle plate. Soup comes in an fancy bowl. Glass cups replace plastic, and water is left on your table in a glass jug so you can refill your cup yourself.

Grilled cheese, what Stoney's is known for. (Margaret Ely/The Washington Post).

Plates, cups and water jugs aside, the menu is the same. The grilled cheese, made with American cheese on thick white bread, comes out crisp and warm. And the famed Super Grilled Cheese, with bacon, onion and tomato, is just as gooey and good as the original.

Stoney's on L will offer happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. with $4 glasses of red and white wine and deals on a different beer and cocktail each night. Another similarity to the P Street location: expect trivia night at the new Stoney's to be announced soon.
