Baltimore rapper Rye Rye opens Strathmore’s Friday Night Eclectic series March 7

Strathmore's Friday Night Eclectic series has established the performing arts venue as one of the best places in Montgomery County to hear top local bands as well as bold-face names. The happy hour is stellar; the venue -- the Mansion at Strathmore -- is coolly vintage.

The series, which launched in 2010 with a focus on local indie music, expanded into new genres last year, including comedy and opera. This season's lineup might take the cake when it opens March 7 with hyped Baltimore rapper Rye Rye, an M.I.A. protege who caught national attention when she was still a teenager. Get tickets here.

Rye Rye still hasn't seen the kind of rap-world acceptance as say, Nicki Minaj, but it's not for lack of talent. Pitchfork gave her manic major-label debut, 2012's "Go! Pop! Bang!", a very respectable 7.0 rating. Her appearance is a coup for the series: Rye Rye, known for her unmistakably chirpy voice, has hit the touring circuit with Robyn and Katy Perry in recent years.
