Hot Shoppes nostalgia comes at a price at the Marriott Marquis

The Hot Shoppes, for those who haven't lived in Washington forever, was a chain of family-style restaurants famous for its Mighty Mo burger, "Teen Twist" sandwich, Orange Freeze milkshake, Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake, and a buffet bar that seemed to stretch on for days. The last Hot Shoppes closed in 1999, but when the news of the Marriott Marquis first came out, there was talk of resurrecting the entire Hot Shoppes brand.

It's back! Sort of. A handful of Hot Shoppes favorites -- including the Mo and those mentioned above -- are available at Anthem, the breakfast-and-lunch-only diner in the hotel's unbelievably sunny lobby.

So what does nostalgia look like in 2014?

The Mighty Mo -- basically, a Big Mac minus the onions, plus "Mighty Mo Sauce," a Russian dressing-like condiment mixture.

There was a time when when a Mighty Mo and a Teen Twist were 55 cents apiece; the Orange Freeze was 35 cents. Food prices have gone up since then, of course, and the burger and ham sandwich now cost $17 and $15, respectively. Inflation and hotel prices don't have the same capacity for nostalgia as humans.
