The 116-seat space served an array of pub classics -- chili cheese fries, nachos, club sandwiches and build-your-own burgers -- made with plant-based ingredients like tempeh, seitan and tofu, as well as globally inspired dishes, like a Bangkok curry bowl. But according to Native Foods Cafe chairman Michael Nack, sales didn't materialize as predicted.
"These are two sites that really failed to perform up to expectations," he says. "They consistently lost money. We don't see any way of really turning them around."
Founded in Palm Springs, Calif., in 1994, Native Foods Cafe originally planned to open eight locations in D.C. and Northern Virginia within its first year in the area. Instead, it opened three outposts: Penn Quarter, Golden Triangle and an ill-fated Falls Church location that shuttered in October.
Nack says the company is reevaluating its concept and seeking to make it "more relevant for today's world." He also noted that additional closures are expected outside of Washington.
