Chef Jose Garces is bringing a Latin marketplace to Union Market

Another win for the food scene in Washington: Chef Jose Garces is bringing a Latin marketplace to Northeast.

Joining the eclectic mixture of food vendors at the flagship Union Market opened by Edens in 2012, Garces's project one street over will be part of a residential and retail project at 1270 Fourth St. NE, another Edens venture. This one is being built in conjunction with partners Level 2 Development and Trammell Crow Residential. A groundbreaking is scheduled for June 13.

Garces's marketplace will feature food stalls, shops and dining concepts. The goal is "to create a dynamic culinary center," according to a press release. In other words, it sounds a bit like Eataly, the Italian-themed juggernaut that may or may not ever make its way to Washington. In a similar vein, Mike Isabella last year announced plans for a 10-concept food hall in Tysons Corner.

The Philadelphia-based Garces has already established a foothold in the District, with Argentinian restaurant Rural Society in the Loews Madison Hotel downtown and the pending Village Whiskey bourbon and burger bar in Shaw.
