Birds of a feather: Elegant close ups amplify the beauty of bird plumes

Bavarian Thomas Lohr has made a living as a fashion photographer for years, photographing beautiful men and women draped in fine textiles and accessories from designers all over the world. But when he decided to document a more personal project, Lohr looked to another elegant creature and its textures: the bird.

In a stunning book new book ‘Birds‘ (2015), Lohr zoomed in on the plumage of birds like the Grus Monacha with its gradation of grays fading to white, the pink flamingo curling into its soft pink feathers, and the vibrant marigolds blending into tangerines on the Sun parakeet. Visiting a variety of bird parks and menageries, Lohr’s “Birds” is an attempt to magnify beauty in minute details and textures. It aims to challenge the reader to blur the lines between nature and abstraction.
