An ordinary white dinner plate takes a playful spin into culinary wonderland under the hands of food photographer Lauren Purnell. Purnell’s wildly popular Tumblr Culinary Canvas features hundreds of white-plated characters and creations, formed by a mix of edible greens, colorful rinds of fruits and vegetables.

Purnell’s journey with “Food Art” started a little over two years ago during a dinner event while she was at university. “I was cooking for a few of my friends (spaghetti carbonara) when I started to play around with the leftover bits of food on my plate, eventually manipulating them into a tree — the ‘spaghettree,’ ” Purnell told In Sight.

“After that, the combination of food and art became a fun part of my culinary experiences and a way for me to channel my creativity by combining it with my love for food and photography. The inspiration behind my pieces comes from my personal experiences and the beauty I perceive in everyday things and in nature. I’m really inspired by my surroundings, whether that is outside or inside the kitchen, and I like to combine the beauty that fresh food provides with things I’m exposed to in life.”
