Monday was Earth Day and, in case you missed it, The Fold interviewed George Crabtree, of Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.

The Interview is an interesting tour through the challenges facing the nation’s energy grid and the barriers to a more efficient energy future. The batteries we have for storage of renewable produced energy, says Crabtree, cannot be produced “cheaply enough.”

Crabtee’s target is to get the cost of the nation’s energy grid down by a factor of five. He goes on to outline the good and bad of shale gas. Crabtree says that shale gas is not sustainable now, but when its extraction becomes a safer endeavor, then “it’s a promising path forward.”

“Can you make it safe?” asked Crabtree rhetorically. “That’s the question.”
