Two men were injured Sunday when a small plane crashed at the Tipton Airport, near Fort Meade, in Anne Arundel County, authorities said.
The two were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, said Capt. Michael Pfaltzgraff, a spokesman for the county fire department. He added that both men had serious but not life-threatening injuries. A Grumman American AA-1 aircraft crashed as it took off from the airport, said a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman.
FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane went down about a half mile from the end of the runway around 2 p.m.
Pfaltzgraff said it took 50 minutes to free the pair from the aircraft, which went down at 1:55 p.m. in the 7500 block of General Aviation Drive, a wooded area in Laurel. The men were identified by Maryland state police as Jeffry P. Barnett, 57, of Glen Burnie, and Thomas L. Cline, 82, of Silver Spring. Barnett was flying the plane, a police spokesman said.
