A power outage throughout much of downtown D.C. and Maryland on Tuesday forced people out of Smithsonian museums, the Wilson Building and classes at University of Maryland. A back-up generator kicked in to keep lights at the White House on.

D.C. homeland security officials believe that an explosion at a southern Maryland electrical facility caused the power surge.

Luckily, Twitter seemed to still work for most those impacted. Here’s a sampling of some of the tweets — some reporting practical information, some alluding to the Washington machine breaking — that people are sending out in the dark.
