Republican Dan Bongino, the former Secret Service agent who came within two percentage points of knocking off heavily favored Rep. John Delaney (D) in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District race last year, has moved to Florida.
Bongino said Thursday that it was “a non-emergency family situation,” not politics, that compelled the move to Palm City on the Atlantic coast. But there is already speculation that he is eyeing the 18th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep.Patrick Murphy (D), who is running for the Senate.
“I enjoy politics and there are certainly opportunities down there,” he said. “But the strategic move would have been to wait for John Delaney [to run for the Senate or governor] and run for the 6th.”
Bongino’s Florida plans were reported Wednesday by Sunshine State News. He said he announced the move on his Facebook page in April but didn’t send out a formal release.
“I didn’t think anybody cared, to be honest about it,” he said.
