A terrifying criminal abduction — or just “playfighting”?

That is the question that faces Prince William County Police, who released video of what appeared to be a person being shoved into the trunk of a car at about 10 p.m. Friday at a Walmart in Woodbridge. Witnesses to the incident were troubled enough to call police and surveillance video appeared to confirm that something might be amiss.

But on Monday, police released additional video that showed the alleged kidnappers and kidnapee calmly shopping in Walmart after the alleged kidnapping.

“The victim does not appear to be in distress or make any attempt to get away from the other individuals,” the police statement said. “All parties eventually exit the store after an estimated 40 minutes.”

Since witnesses to the incident told police it might be just “playfighting,” authorities want to know more and are asking for the public’s help.

“From the beginning, we didn’t really know what it was,” said Sgt. Jonathan L. Perok, a spokesman for Prince William County Police. “We don’t want to call it a prank until we talk to the people involved.”

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call them at 703-792-6500.
