Maryland State Police said the Freightliner box truck was “unable to stop” when traffic came to an “abrupt stop.” It struck another box truck and overturned, landing on top of a 2015 BMW 428i and a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser. The PT Cruiser then rear-ended a Chevrolet Cruz.
The road was closed for more than three hours as crews dealt with the crash and a fuel spill.
Police said they charged the driver of the Freightliner box truck — Evan Ruddy of Metuchen, N.J., with negligent driving and other related charges. The drivers of the vehicles suffered minor injuries and no one was taken to a hospital.
Shortly after that crash, there was another crash also on the outer loop of the Beltway near the Georgetown Pike interchange in Virginia. That crash also caused delays.
