A helicopter crew spotted a large group of dolphins in the Chesapeake Bay earlier this week near Tangier Sound, across from where the Potomac River empties into the bay.

It’s not unheard of to see such groups, or pods, in the bay, said Candy Thomson, a spokeswoman with the Maryland Natural Resources Police. She said last year she got reports from people of seeing them in parts of the Severn River and in the Choptank River on the Eastern Shore.

Thomson said seeing them often “brings a lot of delight to people,” but she cautioned that passersby on boats should be sure to give them plenty of space.

“Take your photos and video, but give them room,” she said.
